Treatment of toenail fungus or onychomychosis
Onychomycosis or nail fungus is a common and contagious nail disease. It is characterized by the development of fungi that feed on the keratin of the nail. Clinically, the nail begins to peel off at one edge, thicken and whiten. The fungi responsible for onychomycosis are dermatophytes (90%) or yeasts and more rarely molds.
The treatment of mycosis is done after a medical diagnosis. It is based on the daily or weekly application of an antifungal varnish for at least two months. Surgical intervention is sometimes necessary in case of late management. If left untreated, the mycosis will spread to other nails and then to the skin and mucous membranes.
In order to prevent nail fungus, a few precautions must be observed:
- Avoid walking barefoot on wet floors in public places
- Don’t share towels
- Dry your feet properly and use an antiperspirant treatment in case of excessive sweating
- preferably wear cotton socks and leather shoes
- wash clothes that have been in contact with the fungus at 60°
- pass the pedicure sets with alcohol at 70° after use.
